Waiting
Ha Jin
"I read Waiting because it won a National Book Award. I mean it's one of the most beautifully written books that I've read in a long time.
The subject matter hovers a little bit much more laborious. It is appropriately named Waiting, and it is about waiting. The story is about an officer in the people's - Chinese People's Republic Army, and he falls in love with a nurse. But he had an arranged marriage, and he can't get out of his arranged marriage; so it's about waiting, and it's about indecision, and it's about not stepping up and really getting what you want out of life.
It was interesting because it's about a culture that I don't know a lot about. I don't know a lot about China, or I don't know a lot about Communism, so the writing is gorgeous, the story is a little bit slow, and I found it frustrating. I would give it a - I guess a three-star rating, just 'cause I can't - I really do want to acknowledge the fact that it was an extraordinary read; but the content was kind of like eh."
