Career Aptitude Test
Career Aptitude Test
What is the typical purpose of a career aptitude test?
In my opinion, there are at least a couple of possible goals. First, to find careers that one might be well-suited for. That seems kind of obvious.
The second and less-considered purpose is to spark ideas that cause one to really think hard about what career might be a good fit. Even just considering the questions long enough to answer “yes” or “no” may be enough to spark new and creative career ideas.
The career aptitude test questions themselves may spark as much creative career thought as the resulting career suggestions, kind of like what career coaching may in part provide. Considering a question like “Do you like working alone?” may cause one to really reflect on work preferences…. regardless of what career suggestions may follow.
I believe that our free career aptitude test provides a great value in provoking creative thought. Generating scientifically accurate career suggestions is, in my humble opinion, kind of an illusion. How do you even know that any answer is right?
I remember career aptitude tests that I took in high school that suggested careers I never would have considered and to this day don’t think I would be good at or happy in. So what was the point? Maybe it was to get me thinking about possible careers, kind of like a career coach.
Although, I have to say that test subjects who have taken our test often report that the careers suggested are sometimes right up their alley, in line with other suggestions, and/or careers they’ve studied or even currently enjoy! My good friend David took the test and it suggested a career in marketing… his current career that he is incredibly successful in.
So, it can seem incredibly accurate at times. Really, accuracy is for you to decide. If you come across a career aptitude test that claims to be incredibly scientific and accurate, I would suggest a healthy dose of skepticism.
Is our career aptitude test scientific? Would it increase your confidence if I said “yes?” Do you need your confidence increased in order to spend three minutes getting new and possibly helpful ideas?
I hate to make unsubstantiated claims about anything. One man’s “scientific” may be another man’s hogwash. Just look at the debate over global warming, the cause of dinosaur extinction or public school teaching methods.
I can confidently assert that our career aptitude test is free, fun and thought-provoking, even if the thoughts that follow your results are something like; “Underwater Welder?! Why in the world would it suggest that? This is the worst career aptitude test ever!”
Consider how your answers may change, depending on your mood or honesty in the moment. I’ve sat with people while they’ve taken our career aptitude test and watched them answer many of the questions differently than I would have answered for them. For example, one person answered “yes” to the question “Do you help the host clean up after a party?” I know this person well enough to know that they don’t. So, being as brutally honest as possible is a lot better than answering the questions in whatever way makes one feel better.
Maybe answering the party question “yes” is an expression of a desire to be the type of person that helps one clean up after a party. In that case the “yes” is more aspirational than accurate. So, there could possibly still be value there, because the person wants to be the kind of person that helps the host clean up.
Whether you’re the kind of person that helps the host clean up or not, take the career test and find out what careers it suggests.
