Are you considering spending good money on a career coach? Take our 3 Minute Career Test first and if you still need a career coach, at least you’ll have something to talk about.

Let’s start with, what does a career coach do? Wikipedia has a very short and vague definition of “career coach.” So, we’re fairly free to just make up whatever we like.

Just kidding.

But seriously, “career coach” services are sometimes offered side-by-side with “life coaching,” which is sometimes offered by LCSWs which stands for “Licensed Clinical Social Workers.” The whole area of what sort of credentials one needs in order to offer themselves as a life coach or career coach (neither of which are we) seems murky to me. I imagine that career coach and life coach quality of service varies dramatically from provider to provider. So, like everything else, it’s probably a “buyer beware” kind of situation. To brag a little, our quality of service is extremely high, because we aim so incredibly low… we don’t promise to deliver much of anything…. Certainly not some form of coaching.

I do know that in a time of high unemployment, what people need is jobs and careers. Careers start with some degree of interest, aptitude and enthusiasm. Some recognition that what a career seems to be about may be a good fit, given a person’s interests and experience.

What if one needs some ideas for careers? Like, “I have no idea whatsoever what career is right for me.” Well, you can talk to your career coach, life coach, soccer coach, old P.E. coach, an inanimate object (like a stagecoach), do a little reading, talk to your friends, learn more about college counseling, take an aptitude test and/or take our career test.

I don’t know for sure, but I imagine a lot of career coach work centers around figuring- out what a person might enjoy and be good at, that also fits a person’s other requirements including but limited to circumstances of work, pay, hours of work, opportunity for advancement and more. Then, it probably moves on to coming up with strategies and tactics to pursue a career.

Our 3 Minute Career Test is no replacement for a good career coach, especially if one of your goals is to spend money on a career coach, since our test is totally free. Heck, our test is no replacement for anything that might help you.

The test is really just a non-scientific, but hopefully thought-provoking, bit of entertainment. But, if you think about it, lots of great ideas have come from non-scientific but thought-provoking entertainment. Some examples include;

At times, even though it’s non-scientific, our 3 Minute Career Test has seemed to me to be amazingly accurate and always thought-provoking (even if the next thought that’s provoked is “WTF with these career suggestions?”).

One example of actual instance of possibly helpful thought provocation occurred when, a friend of mine took the test and found that two of the four suggested careers were her minor in college and a career that a recruiter had recently suggested. Isn’t that amazing?

Finally, the test not only generates some career ideas, but also some links to other sites to learn more. Those links might go to Wikipedia or to sites to help you get some information on schools to pursue training.
